Plainwell Community Schools continues to focus on the importance of Early Childhood Education. Through the State of Michigan’s Great Parents, Great Start program and the Five by Five initiative, PCS brings the excitement of education to our community’s youngest members – the Little Trojans (ages birth to five).
Little Trojans – Great Parents, Great Start Program:
Great Parents, Great Start is an exciting FREE educational program that connects parents of children (ages birth to 5 years) with other district families, community resources, the intermediate school district (AAESA), and our local school district (Plainwell Community Schools).
The following are FREE resources provided through Plainwell’s Great Parents, Great Start Program for families in our district:
- Assessment testing to identify physical and learning delays.
- Assessment testing to identify social and emotional concerns.
- Developmental charts for monthly/yearly milestones.
- Literacy and physical activities to achieve monthly milestones.
- In-home visitations and/or classroom meetings to help promote cognitive, physical, and social growth for Little Trojans.
- Information and activities for Plainwell’s Five-by-Five Initiative program.
- Connecting Little Trojans with therapy services through AAESA or Plainwell Community Schools- (i.e. occupational, physical, speech/language, behavioral)
- Imagination Library (free hard covered books for children ages birth to five years)
Plainwell Community School’s “Play-n-Learn” Groups provide FREE monthly literacy-based activities for children (ages 0-5) and their parents at Starr Elementary School, every third Tuesday of the month, from 10-11am in the Early Childhood Discovery Center- except for Dad Night’s. Come explore your child’s many developmental domains: sensory, gross & fine motor, social and language. Information on parenting topics (related to early childhood) will be shared at each group, as well as, connections to community resources.
*A FREE book and snack are provided for each child at every group session.

October 18th: Stuffed Animal Day– Bring your favorite stuffed animal to Starr’s Veterinary Clinic. Stations will be open for feeding, grooming, and providing medical checkups on your favorite furry friend.
November 15th “Construction Night” With Dad- Dads (or male guardian) let your imagination be your guide while creating skyscrapers, rockets, and castles with your Little Trojan in the Discovery Center from 5-6pm. Pizza, apple slices, and juice will be provided for dinner- RSVP before Nov. 1st.
January 17th: “Welcome to the Races” Dad Night – Dads (or male guardian) race Hot Wheels and homemade sailboats with your Little Trojan in the Discovery Center from 6-7pm. Ice Cream sundaes will be provided for tonight’s bedtime snack. RSVP by January 1st.
Families get healthy and have fun this winter by playing games and improving your child’s fine & gross motor, balance, coordination, and team building skills at Hick’s Gym on Tuesdays from 9:30-10:00am these “Fun-Kid-Fit” mornings:

Dec. 13th: Superhero Camp- Calling all Superheros!!! Dress in your favorite cape, costume, and/or mask. We will search for Kryptonite, tag villains, leap over tall buildings, and practice our aim at throwing bean bags & Frisbees. (No fake weapons please)
Feb. 14th: Animal Movement & Music– Hop like a frog. Wiggle like a caterpillar. Stomp like an elephant. Gallop like a horse. Learn these different animal movements and make a beat with musical instruments.
The focus of this “aquatic” Tuesday mini-series (geared towards children ages 5 months to 5 years old) is to create a nurturing water environment through playing, singing, and one-on-one fun in the pool. Join your little one as they learn the following primary swimming skills at Plainwell’s Middle School Pool: water conditioning, front float, back float, and submersion. The cost of the program is only $10/family for all 4 sessions and includes a FREE pass to Open Night Swims- Friday and Saturday evenings all year. You must attend ALL four 30 minute sessions to be eligible for this program & we need at least 5 families to participate in the mini-series to run it.

My name is Rebecca (Becky) Huberty and I am so excited to start my second year at Plainwell as your Great Start Family Coach and Early Childhood Liaison. I have lived in the district for a decade now and my husband and I have three little girls at Starr Elementary. As a former teacher, I am thrilled to share my knowledge and to connect families with FREE services and resources in the area. My goal is for ALL Children (ages birth to five) to be successful learners at Plainwell Community Schools.
In my spare time, I enjoy writing young adult novels- two of which are published under my pen name RL Stoll. I am active at Northbridge Church. I love to read, swim, and travel.
