Last Friday, the PHS Multicultural Club dedicated their day off from school to volunteer at the Life Care Center of Plainwell and embark on a cultural field trip! At the Life Care Center, students assisted in cleaning and organizing the activity room, played games with residents and raked leaves in the courtyard. This experience was meaningful for everyone involved, and the smiles of the residents made all their efforts worthwhile! Following their volunteer work, the group attended the Día de Los Muertos "Day of the Dead" Celebration at the Kalamazoo Expo Center. Students delighted in delicious food, lively music and an inspiring performance by a traditional folkloric dance group. This experience truly brought the beauty of the culture to life for our club members! We are incredibly proud of our students for choosing to spend their day off engaging in community service and cultural learning. It was a memorable day for these PHS students!

During his time as Principal, Kyler visited classrooms to gather feedback from his fellow students, participated in a weekly staff meeting, shared his ideas for improving Gilkey and enjoyed a special lunch of his choice (a happy meal). The Young 5 students at Cooper Elementary have been keeping busy this fall. In math and science, they have been working on a unit with pumpkins and leaves. This unit introduced them to lessons in counting, sorting, patterning, graphing and measuring! Additionally, the students have become familiar with all the Alpha Friends (letters and sounds). To celebrate their achievement, they recently enjoyed reading the story “Chica Chica Boom Boom,” creating alphabet crowns and eating ABC “SpaghettiOs”! Keep working hard, Koalas, we are proud of you!

Congratulations to Maristella Cassada, Olivia Jankowski and Estephanie Matias on their audition, acceptance and performance in yesterday's MSBOA District XI Middle School Honors Band! Estephanie sat principal (first chair) of her section and both Maristella and Olivia sat principal (first chair) of the second part of their sections! These students went above and beyond to not only learn their Plainwell band music, but also put in extra time practicing their honor band music. They spent all day at Marshall HS with Mrs. Lori VonKoenig (retired music educator from Stevensville Lakeshore and recipient of the MSBOA Teacher of the Year) playing with other students from Kalamazoo, Branch, St. Joseph, Calhoun and Allegan counties. The performance was absolutely wonderful and we are so proud of these star musicians! Please mark your calendar for the upcoming Winter Band Concerts on December 3 (6th and 7th Grade) and December 12 (8th Grade).
