Career Exploration and College Readiness

Each year your student is at Plainwell Middle School they will receive programming from the school counselors on career exploration. Schools in Michigan are required to help each student develop their own Educational Development Plan (EDP). An EDP is a document that collects a student’s interests, abilities and career exploration in one spot. These are valuable in helping students make academic choices and continue the process of deciding their future plans.

Exploration by Grade:

6th: Develop self awareness of interests, abilities, strengths and how they relate to a future career. Introduce the 6 Michigan career pathways

7th: Develop awareness of how each student learns best and their specific learning style. Use district software to connect personal interests with possible careers.

8th: Research 1-3 specific careers more deeply with a focus on educational pathways through high school and postsecondary. Tie career interests to high school educational choices and introduce additional opportunities like the Allegan Vocational Tech programming.

Career Cruising is software that the district uses to help students create and store their EDP’s. It also serves as a tool for students to explore career options and learn about themselves.
