Curriculum and Instruction

Professional Learning Communities
Plainwell Community Schools utilizes Professional Learning Communities (PLC) as a structure by which all curriculum is evaluated, adopted and adapted. Teachers take part in regular team meetings where they reflect on student achievement data and, collaborate to inform instructional decision-making.
Curriculum Evaluation and Adoption Cycle
Plainwell Community Schools reviews core curriculum on a five-year cycle. This cycle includes two years of evaluating the current curriculum, researching new curriculum resources, and piloting up to three tools. Each of these steps is done with teachers and administrators doing deep dives into the curriculum details and developing a proposal and presentation for final school board approval.
State Standards and Policy Alignment
Plainwell Community Schools curriculum is aligned with Michigan state standards as well as Common Core academic standards. On this page, you will find the Plainwell Community Schools core curriculum maps that include the general scope and sequence of taught curriculum.
Reproductive Health Curriculum
Plainwell Community Schools offers a Reproductive Health curriculum. While the state does not require we have this type of curriculum, if we do, there are specific rules and regulations to follow. Below you will find a link to the current approved curriculum. If you are interested in serving on the advisory council, email Charlie Wynne at charlie.wynne@plainwellschools.org.
Science of Reading
The science of reading is a body of research that encompasses evidence-based practices for teaching literacy. It highlights the essential components of effective reading instruction, such as phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Utilizing Section 35j literacy development funds, the district purchased a comprehensive K-5 English Language Arts curriculum that aligns with both state and Common Core standards. This curriculum is grounded in the latest research in the science of reading, ensuring that instruction supports the development of strong literacy skills for all students.
Curriculum Concerns
Parents/guardians who have concerns about curriculum are asked to reach out to their child’s building principal for assistance. Subsequent appeals should be directed to the superintendent of schools.
Parent and Family Resources
On our curriculum maps, we offer parents and guardians links to at-home resources that complement what students are learning in the classroom. This includes resources like Seesaw, Buzz, Raz Kids, or IXL to name a few.
Student Assessment
Plainwell Community Schools utilizes NWEA assessments and SAT assessments to provide teachers with student performance benchmarks to help guide our PLC development and improve instruction.
Additionally, each year most students in grades 3-12 will take part in some state assessment including but not limited to M-STEP, PSAT, SAT, ACT Workkeys, WIDA, etc. These tests offer more insight into student performance, so it is critical that all students take part in these assessments.
