SAIL ART & ADVENTURE: The students in the Middle School SAIL program have been busy the last couple of weeks working on a variety of art projects, including: - Studying music, art and the Fibonacci ratio. The students combined the idea of Fibonacci and music by studying artist Jackson Pollock. They worked on “Action Paintings “ while listening to jazz and watched a video on how Pollock’s works have recently been discovered by scientists that his paintings consistently have the fractal quality of Fibonacci more than any other artist because of the natural movement of the body! - Next, the students got creative during their study on solar by creating sun sculptures made from paper clay and tissue paper that dried in the sun! To end their week of SAIL last week, the PMS students took an adventure to Holland Nature Center where they learned about birds of prey! It's been a great summer at SAIL! This week is our final week for Session 2 and we look forward to more learning, artwork and adventures for the PCS SAIL students!

2021/22 PCS ENROLLMENT: Plainwell Community Schools is now enrolling for the 2021/22 school year. Families have the option of one of three learning options: 100% Virtual, Hybrid and In-Person learning options are available. Students who select a virtual or hybrid option, will be able to transition to in-person instruction at the trimester (building availability will be dependent on enrollment).   Virtual & Hybrid Learning Options! Plainwell Virtual & Hybrid for K-12 is proud to offer the following virtual learning options for the PCS students for the 2021/22 school year. This program will have some exciting revisions coming from last year, but will include many of the outstanding PCS educators that are returning to continue on the virtual journey! - 100% Full Virtual (Synchronous & Asynchronous options) provides families with the option to learn at your own pace and on your own schedule, all while receiving an outstanding PCS education. - Hybrid Learning provides students with the opportunity for virtual learning with in-person supports and in-person learning options. Learn from home, with an option to have partial in-person learning, small group intervention instruction and "specials" which provide a more hybrid approach. Begin your educational journey with Today’s Learners & Tomorrow’s Leaders by enrolling today at plainwellschools.org. MIDDLE SCHOOL SAIL: Last week, we welcomed our SAIL - Session 2 students to the program. At the Middle School, the students learned about our planet. In Mrs. Cooley's class they did research on volcanoes and created pamphlets giving the surrounding population information on how to stay safe if their volcano was to erupt. In Ms. Flynn's class they looked at artwork by Hokasi and "the great wave". They studied hue intensity and how to push and pull the tide using tints and shades in a monochromatic color scheme. Students also made volcano vase's and focused on form and texture and how the sense of touch is heightened when sight is taken away. It's been a great summer in Plainwell's SAIL program!

SAIL ART: Our second session SAIL program is underway, but we can’t wrap-up our first session without sharing some fun artwork from our Middle School SAIL program. The students in Maggie Flynn’s art class had fun getting creative this summer while making clay keychains that represented the theme of their food truck, making abstract artwork of Kandinsky while creating zoo animals and learning how to shade planet drawings by using a light source. The SAIL program has been a great adventure for our students so far this summer and we look forward to continuing throughout Session 2 of Summer Adventure in Learning.

SAIL IN SPACE: This week the Middle School SAIL students learned how gravity and air resistance impact NASA's work when landing a rover on Mars. They took their knowledge and created working models of their own landers. It was great to see all of the different designs they came up with, they were all so creative.

FIRST WEEK OF SAIL: It was a great week, as our summer students set SAIL on their Summer Adventure In Learning! We were so excited to welcome these students back in the buildings to learn and grow through this awesome summer program. Here are some highlights from the week: 1. The K-5 students created a social contract that we’re calling our Compass! 2. Middle School STEAM students planned, marketed and created business plans for how they would run a food truck. 3.  We already have high school students completing classes.  Self-paced means SAIL ends for high school students when they’ve achieved their credits. 4. Our elementary students read about character development throughout the week.  We finished this with Friday Adventure Day where students created their own super hero - mask, cape, comic and all! It was a great first week and we cannot wait to welcome back our Sailors next week!
